Wool, wonderful wool

Updated: Aug 5

In the words of one of our friends, “I bought a wool mattress and wool bedding. It is a wonderful material and I will never go back to anything synthetic again!”

Once you’ve tried it, you won’t be able to resist it. That’s what people say about natural wool bedding and natural wool mattresses. It’s all down to the unique properties of sheep wool, a gorgeous material that’s enjoying a well-deserved renaissance right now. Let’s explore the advantages of putting natural wool bedding at the heart of your nights. It might just be a life-changer.

Wool is a wonderful, versatile natural fibre that has been used by humans since 10,000 BC. Being from a fellow animal it is very in-tune with the human body and so ideal for clothing and bedding.

Wool is ecological sound as it is natural, sustainable, does not need to be imported and is neither cruel to humans or animals. Sheep enjoy being sheared as this normally takes place during warmer months and it allows their coat to regrow healthily for the winter. Wool requires minimal processing, consuming far less energy than any other fabric. All waste wool, along with recycled wool, not suitable for clothing or bedding, can be used for building insulation or fabric sheeting for land erosion control. Let's not forget it helps to protect and create jobs in the UK and has no air miles as British manufacturers use local wool wherever possible.

So, let's get on to it's other important benefits for beds and bedding:

Breathable - wool controls heat keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Hence why summer suits and winter coats are both made from wool. Perfect for anyone that 'runs hot' at night.

Moisture wicking - Compared to polyester at 4% and cotton at 20%, wool’s water vapour uptake is more than 30%. That makes the difference between a sticky, tossing-and-turning nightmare of a night and a deep, enjoyable, refreshing dive into the lovely darkness.

Natural fire retardancy - wool has high nitrogen content so it does not burn, it will char. It does not fuel fire unlike man made fabric. Fireman's uniforms are made from it. Beds have to be fire retardant by law, so those containing wool require far less chemicals to achieve this.

Hypoallergenic - dust mites hate wool! And, at it does not give off any irritants as particles or chemicals it is especially ideal for asthma and eczema suffers.

Spring like - Wool has a weird structure too. On a tiny level it has a unique helix running through the middle, making it behave a lot like a spring. It’s great at resisting pressure, making it hard to flatten hence the lovely luxury feel.

Wool is good for you, good for Britain and good for the planet. Sleep tight being relaxed in body and mind.

Love wool, it would be Baaahhhmy to buy anything else.
